![]() ![]() ![]() He later moved to Bainbridge Island and began writing columns and articles for various magazines including Esquire, The International Herald Tribune, and The New York Times. While here, he wrote his first novel, Your Day in the Barrel, and then three more. Upon his return to the United States, Furst moved to Seattle and took up work as a advertising copywriter. He did however complete a Fulbright teaching fellowship at the University of Montpellier in France. Furst began a PhD, but did not complete it. He then became a teaching assistant at Pennsylvania State University, where he would also do his masters. He majored in English at Oberlin College, and after graduating became a taxi drive in New York.
